VALORANT CHAMPIONS: LOS ANGELES OPENING
VALORANT Champions 2023 took place in our own backyard: Los Angeles, California. As the global finale to the VCT season, the event brought together the world’s top teams for the ultimate showdown — and we saw an opportunity to create something uniquely meta in response. Paying homage to LA’s identity as the entertainment capital of the world, we embraced a cinematic, self-aware documentary approach that blurred the lines between esports and filmmaking.
Our concept leaned into the idea of making the making of part of the story. Instead of keeping the camera strictly focused on the competition, we turned it around — capturing behind-the-scenes moments from our own commercial sets, filming pros as they navigated lighting setups, production holds, and off-the-cuff interviews while heading to and from our shoots.
We documented the downtime: the van rides, the impromptu conversations in green rooms, the casual team banter — the things fans rarely get to see. The result was an unfiltered, intimate portrait of the biggest stars in VALORANT at the peak of their careers, set against the backdrop of a tournament that crowned Evil Geniuses as North America’s first world champions.
